8 tips before you design
TIP 1
36" around the island
Minimum walkway. 42" where you cook, 48" for two cooks.
TIP 2
Kids? Skip the base microwave
Keep hot food above little hands: counter height or higher, but no more than 54" up.
TIP 3
Dishwasher next to the sink
Within 36" of the sink keeps drips off the floor.
TIP 4
Leave landing space
15" of counter by the fridge handle, 12" and 15" on the sides of the range.
TIP 5
24" per stool
Plus 36" behind the stools so people can get by.
TIP 6
Check door swings
Fridge, dishwasher and oven doors shouldn’t hit each other or the island.
TIP 7
Uppers to the ceiling
With 8-foot ceilings, 36" uppers plus crown usually reach the top.

One star of the show
