A Fresh Take on Townhome Living
An end-unit townhome in Burke with a new waterfall-island kitchen, a wood-slat fireplace wall, four updated baths and a walk-out lower level.
00 · INTRODUCTION
Inside the Mason Bluff Renovation
The house had good bones: an end unit with three finished levels, two fireplaces and a wooded view.
What it did not have was a kitchen that worked. The original oak cabinets, white appliances and closed-in layout made the main level feel dark.
We opened the kitchen, brought one finish palette through the house, and refreshed every bathroom and the lower level. The finished home was claimed in five days.

01 · BEFORE
Where the Story Began

Before: an oak kitchen with white appliances, and the original stairs and lower level.
The starting point was a common one in Northern Virginia townhomes: original oak cabinets, older appliances and finishes that had not changed in years. The rooms were fine, but nothing tied them together.
02 · THE KITCHEN
The Heart of the Refresh

After: white Shaker cabinets, quartz counters, stainless appliances and a waterfall island.
We replaced the oak kitchen with white Shaker cabinets, quartz counters and stainless appliances. A quartz waterfall island became the centerpiece, with glass pendants above it.
Opening the space let more light reach the kitchen and gave it a direct connection to the dining area.

The kitchen now flows into the dining area. Some rooms are shown virtually staged.
03 · THE LIVING ROOM
Warm Wood, Modern Character

A wood-slat feature wall and a dark fireplace surround.
A wood-slat feature wall and a dark fireplace surround give the living room its personality. The warm wood balances the white kitchen next to it.
04 · BEDROOMS AND BATHS
Calm Bedrooms, Four Finished Baths

Left: the primary bedroom. Right: one of four renovated bathrooms.
Light finishes keep the bedrooms calm, and the primary bedroom’s vaulted ceiling adds height.
All four bathrooms were updated with marble-look tile, penny-round shower floors and backlit mirrors. Matte-black fixtures add contrast to the light tile.
05 · LOWER LEVEL AND DECK
Another Level of Living

The walk-out lower level: a rec room with a fireplace and doors to the backyard.
The walk-out lower level got new stairs, flooring and lighting. It now has a rec room, a full bathroom and an upgraded laundry room.

The rear deck looks out over the trees.
Outside, a private fenced yard and a wooded rear deck give the home a quiet place for morning coffee.
06 · TAKEAWAYS
What Made This Townhome Stand Out
Fix the kitchen first
The dated kitchen was the biggest drag on the house. Replacing it changed how the whole main level felt.
Use one palette
Light surfaces and black accents connect the kitchen, baths and lower level.
Finish every level
The lower level, stairs and laundry were not an afterthought. Buyers saw a home that was done.
