Is Your Attic Breathing? How Attic Ventilation Protects Your Roof

Mason shows how your attic should breathe, the warning signs, and how we fix the airflow.

A hot attic can cook your roof from the inside.

Watch Mason’s video, then read how a healthy attic breathes, the warning signs, and how we fix it.

What Mason Checks

How a Healthy Attic Breathes

SOFFIT VENTS

Cool air comes in under the roof edge.

RISING AIR

Warm air rises through the attic.

RIDGE VENT

Heat and moisture leave at the top.

A healthy attic breathes. Cool air comes in through soffit vents under the roof edge.

As it warms up, it rises and leaves through a ridge vent at the very top, carrying heat and moisture out.

When insulation blocks the soffits, or there’s no ridge vent, the air gets trapped.

An attic that can’t breathe works against your roof all year.

Warning Signs

Signs Your Attic Can’t Breathe

VERY HOT ATTIC

Extreme heat in summer.

FROST OR MOLD

Frost or mold on the roof wood.

ICICLES

Icicles and ice along the gutters.

In summer, the attic gets extremely hot and the shingles bake from below.

In winter, warm, wet air turns into frost on the roof wood, mold grows, and snow melts and refreezes at the edge, forming ice dams.

Look into the attic at the roof edges: you should see daylight or vent channels at the soffits, not insulation stuffed tight against the roof.

How We Fix It

A Vent Upgrade Now, or a New Roof Later

We check every vent and the insulation. We clear the soffits, add baffles so air can flow, install a ridge vent, and seal air leaks from the house below.

Caught early vs. caught late

Caught early, it’s a vent upgrade. Caught late, it’s mold removal and a new roof.

In Northern Virginia

Code sets attic vent area at 1/150 of the attic floor area, or 1/300 when part of the venting is high on the roof. Northern Virginia’s hot summers and freezing winters make both ends of that problem real. We fixed this on our Rock Church Hill Rd project in Stafford.
