Why Your Shower Floor Slopes, and What Puddles Mean

Mason shows how a shower floor should slope, what puddles mean, and how we rebuild it.

If water puddles in your shower, the floor was built wrong, and it’s quietly causing damage.

Watch Mason’s video, then read why shower floors slope, the signs of a problem, and how we fix it.

01

What Mason Checks

The Slope That Keeps a Shower Dry

NOT FLAT

A shower floor slopes toward the drain.

¼ INCH PER FOOT

The standard slope for a shower floor.

DRIES FAST

Every drop runs straight to the drain.

A shower floor isn’t flat. It’s built with a gentle slope toward the drain, about a quarter inch for every foot.

That slope makes every drop of water run straight to the drain, so the floor dries fast.

When the floor is built flat, or it sinks over time, water has nowhere to go.

A puddle that stays is water that’s going somewhere else.

Warning Signs

Signs Your Shower Floor Is Wrong

PUDDLES

Water that stays long after the shower.

DARK GROUT

Grout that turns dark and stays dark.

MUSTY SMELL

A smell that won’t go away.

Water sits in low spots and soaks into the grout, day after day. It works through the mortar bed and reaches the wood below.

The subfloor rots, and the tile starts to crack and loosen.

Check this today

After a shower, look for water that stays put for more than a few minutes. Roll a marble on the floor: it should head to the drain.

How We Fix It

A Floor Redo Now, or More Later

We remove the old tile and the shower floor. We repair any rotted wood, rebuild the base with the right slope to the drain, add a waterproof membrane, and then install new tile.

Caught early vs. caught late

Caught early, it’s a shower floor redo. Caught late, it’s the shower and the floor beneath it.

In Northern Virginia

Many Northern Virginia homes are 40 to 60 years old. In Arlington, about 45% of homes were built before 1970 (U.S. Census, 2019–2023). Shower floors that have settled over decades are a common reason for puddles in older homes. We rebuilt a shower floor like this on our Weir Pl walk-in shower in Manassas.
