Can That Kitchen Wall Come Down? How to Tell If It’s Load-Bearing
Some walls only divide rooms. Others hold up your house. Here’s how to tell, and how we open them safely.
An open kitchen starts with one question: what is that wall holding up? Some walls only divide rooms. Others carry the floors, rooms and roof above.
Watch Mason’s video, then read how to tell the difference, what goes wrong when it’s done badly, and how we open walls safely.
01
What Mason Checks
Partition Walls vs. Load-Bearing Walls
PARTITION WALL
Divides rooms and carries nothing but itself.
LOAD-BEARING WALL
Holds up floor joists, rooms upstairs and part of the roof.
THE LOAD PATH
Weight travels down through the wall to the foundation.
Some walls just divide rooms. Take one out, and nothing above it notices.
A load-bearing wall is different. The floor joists, the rooms upstairs and part of the roof rest on it, and the wall passes that weight down to the foundation.
Remove it, and that weight still has to go somewhere. The answer is a beam sized for the load, with posts that carry it down to solid footings.

Warning Signs
Clues a Wall May Be Load-Bearing
JOISTS ON TOP
Floor or ceiling joists rest on top of the wall.
MIDDLE OF THE HOUSE
It runs down the center of the house.
WALL ABOVE IT
Another wall sits directly above it upstairs.
Remove a load-bearing wall the wrong way, and the joists above start to sag. Cracks show up in the ceiling and in the walls upstairs.
Doors start to stick and floors start to slope. In the worst case, part of the structure can fail.
Check this today
Look in the basement or attic: if the joists run across the wall and rest on it, treat it as load-bearing until a professional confirms. Never cut into a wall to “see”.

How We Fix It
How We Open a Wall Safely
First, we build temporary walls to hold the load. Then we remove the wall and install a properly sized beam, with posts that carry the weight down to solid footings.
Caught early vs. caught late
Done right, you get the open kitchen you wanted. Done wrong, it’s structural repairs that cost far more than the wall.
In Northern Virginia
In Fairfax County, removing a wall requires a building permit, and Virginia code requires a permit for work on any structural part of a home. We handle the permit and the inspections. We opened up a closed-in main level this way on our Ridgeway Dr renovation in Springfield.
