The $10 Hose That Floods Kitchens: Dishwasher and Fridge Lines

Mason shows which hoses to check, the warning signs, and the braided lines we install instead.

Behind your dishwasher and fridge are small supply hoses that hold water under pressure, all day and all night.

Watch Mason’s video, then read why old rubber hoses fail, the signs to watch for, and the simple fix.

01

What Mason Checks

The Small Hoses Behind Your Appliances

SUPPLY HOSES

Carry water to the dishwasher and the fridge ice maker.

ALWAYS UNDER PRESSURE

Full of pressurized water even when nothing runs.

BRAIDED STEEL

Much tougher than plain rubber hoses.

Your dishwasher and fridge connect to the water with small supply hoses. They sit behind the appliances, where nobody looks.

Those hoses hold water under pressure all the time, even when nothing is running.

Old rubber hoses get brittle with age. They bulge, crack, and one day they burst.

Warning Signs

Warning Signs Behind the Appliances

BULGING HOSE

Rubber hoses that bulge or show cracks.

RUSTY VALVES

Rust or drips at the shutoff valves.

WARPED FLOOR

Raised or soft flooring near the dishwasher.

A burst hose can pour out gallons of water every minute, and it won’t stop until someone shuts it off.

If you’re at work or away, that water spreads under the cabinets and the floor, and can reach the ceiling below.

Check this today

Pull the fridge out, open the cabinet next to the dishwasher, and look at each hose and valve. Plain black rubber, bulges or rust mean it’s time to replace.

How We Fix It

A Quick Swap Now, or New Floors Later

We check every hose and every shutoff valve. We replace old rubber hoses with braided stainless steel lines, install new shutoff valves, and can add a leak sensor that warns you right away.

Caught early vs. caught late

Caught early, it’s a quick swap. Caught late, it’s new floors and cabinets.

In Northern Virginia

Many Northern Virginia homes are 40 to 60 years old. In Arlington, about 45% of homes were built before 1970 (U.S. Census, 2019–2023). Even in newer homes, appliance hoses are often the original ones installed with the appliance. We replaced old supply hoses like these on our Cohasset Ln kitchen remodel in Woodbridge.
