Why Kitchen Counter Outlets Need GFCI Protection
Mason shows how GFCI outlets work, how to test them, and when they need replacing.
The outlets along your kitchen counter can protect you from a dangerous shock, if they’re the right kind.
Watch Mason’s video, then read how a GFCI works, the warning signs, and how we fix outlets that don’t protect you.

What Mason Checks
How a GFCI Protects You
MEASURES BOTH WAYS
Checks the power going out and coming back.
SENSES A LEAK
Notices when power escapes through water or a person.
TRIPS FAST
Cuts the power in a fraction of a second.
Outlets that serve the counters need GFCI protection. A GFCI constantly checks the power going out and the power coming back.
When they match, everything is normal. If power leaks out, through water on the counter or through you, they stop matching.
The GFCI senses that difference and shuts the power off in a fraction of a second. Without it, a wet hand on a toaster or a kettle can turn into a serious shock.

A working GFCI is one of the cheapest safety devices in your home.

Warning Signs
Warning Signs at Your Counter Outlets
TEST DOES NOTHING
Pressing Test doesn’t cut the power.
SPARKS OR HEAT
Outlets that spark, buzz or feel warm.
TRIPPING BREAKER
A breaker that keeps tripping.
A GFCI that no longer trips looks exactly like one that works. You only find out when it matters.
Worn outlets that spark or run warm are also a fire risk, not only a shock risk.

Plug in a lamp, press Test on each counter GFCI, and make sure the lamp goes off. Press Reset to restore power. Test them once a month.

How We Fix It
Tested, Replaced and Wired Right
We test every outlet along the counters. Old or missing GFCIs are replaced with new ones, wired correctly, and tested so they trip when they should.
Caught early vs. caught late
It’s a small job that costs far less than an accident.
In Northern Virginia
Virginia’s current code, in effect since January 2024, uses the 2020 National Electrical Code, which requires GFCI protection for outlets serving kitchen countertops. In Fairfax County, new or moved outlets need a permit; a same-spot swap does not. We updated the counter outlets on our Marilyn Dr kitchen remodel in Alexandria.
Planning a bigger project?
Every kitchen we remodel gets new counter outlets, GFCI-protected and tested. See prices and real projects on our kitchen remodeling page.
