Why Is Your Kitchen Floor Buckling? Hidden Water Under the Boards
Mason shows where the water comes from, the warning signs, and how we fix the floor for good.
If your kitchen floor is lifting or buckling, water is almost always hiding underneath it.
Watch Mason’s video, then read how it happens, the signs to watch for, and how we fix it.

What Mason Checks
How Water Lifts a Wood or Laminate Floor
BOARDS SOAK UP WATER
Wood and laminate swell like a sponge.
EDGE GAPS
Small gaps let boards move with the seasons.
NOWHERE TO GO
Swollen boards push up and buckle.
Wood and laminate floors are made of boards that soak up water, like a sponge. They’re installed with small gaps at the edges, so they can move a little with the seasons.
A slow leak from the dishwasher, the sink or the fridge line sends water under the boards. The boards swell and push against each other.
With nowhere to go, they lift up and buckle. Underneath, the subfloor stays wet.

The buckle you see is usually far from the leak you don’t.

Warning Signs
Signs Water Is Under Your Floor
RAISED EDGES
Boards with raised or cupped edges.
SOFT SPOTS
Soft areas near the dishwasher or sink.
MUSTY SMELL
A musty smell in the kitchen.
Underneath, the subfloor softens, grows mold and starts to rot.
The longer the leak runs, the more of the floor has to come out.

Walk the floor near the dishwasher, sink and fridge in socks. Feel for raised edges or soft spots, and look for gaps along the base of the cabinets.

How We Fix It
A Few Boards Now, or the Whole Floor Later
First, we find and fix the leak. Then we remove the damaged boards, dry or replace the subfloor, and install new flooring that matches.
Caught early vs. caught late
Caught early, it’s a few boards. Caught late, it’s the whole kitchen floor.
In Northern Virginia
Many Northern Virginia homes are 40 to 60 years old. In Arlington, about 45% of homes were built before 1970 (U.S. Census, 2019–2023). In older homes, the leak is often an original valve or supply line. We repaired water-damaged flooring like this on our Ferndale St renovation in Springfield.
